Buying a new golf cart lets you pick out the options that you desire.  Perhaps you want extra protection from the elements so you want a model with a good enclosure.  Do you go way off the beaten path?  If so, you may need more than standard ground clearance to make it over the ruts, rocks, and backwoods debris.  Your new golf cart may need a lift kit to take you were you want to go. Want to pull along a mini-trailer?  You’ll need a tow hitch to pull your buggy.

The standard electric golf cart that comes with a top and a windshield will go for around $5-$7k.   In this price range you can expect some nice creature-comforts like a beverage cooler and maybe a cover for the clubs.
Do you need your cart to be street legal?  If so, there are some mandatory items you’ll need, like headlights, that will up the price of your new golf cart.

Used Golf Carts For Sale

Good, reliable used carts can be had for around $2,500 – $5,000, around half of what a new cart costs.  A good tip if you’re in the used market is to purchase a reconditioned cart from a dealer.  These models have been thoroughly gone over and repaired.  You’ll pay a little more for a dealer reconditioned cart but they do include a warranty.  If you go the ‘as is’ route, well, you don’t know what kind of problems you may be facing down the road.  But you’ll be saving about half the cost a new cart will run you.

Types of Golf Carts

Golf carts are typically divided into two camps:  electric and gas powered.  Each is has advantages based on the projected use it’ll receive.

Electric carts are fine for the golf course.  Most driving is done on paved or well cared for cart paths.  The electric models generally produce enough power to navigate any hilly terrain found on the course.  (It most cases anyway!)

Gas power is useful to those who need a vehicle that can power through diverse terrain.  Taking the cart into the woods or where there isn’t a path requires more horsepower than electric models provide.  Gasoline powered units can take you places electrics dare not tread.

Supply And Demand

If you plan on purchasing a golf cart in a location where golf is a regular part of the scene’ prices will run higher.   Areas that are blessed with many golf courses (think the Carolinas) will generally command top dollar for golf carts.  As will the retirement communities previously mentioned.  (Although these areas also provide more of a selection in the used golf cart market.)
